Money Myths and Realities about Trade Shows
From the Society of Manufacturing Engineers as seen in the Exhibitor Online Newsletter
Trimming marketing and trade show budgets is a common reaction to a slowing economy. That, however, can be a bad move. Here are three myths that cause companies to eliminate trade shows from their budgets and three realities that explain why maintaining a show presence is vital.
- Myth: buyers don’t attend trade shows.
Reality: About 85% of trade show attendees buy one or more products exhibited. This percentage increases during a tight economic market.
- Myth: My sales team makes more contacts from field calls than at shows.
Reality: A salesperson makes an average of 20 to 30 contacts per day at a trade show, versus three to four sales calls in the field.
- Myth: It’s easier to close a sale after a field call than after exhibiting at a show.
Reality: Roughly 48% of trade show leads require no sales call to close. For sales that do require closing calls, trade show leads require 1.3 calls to close versus 3.7 calls for field sales.
